<description>Addressing Japan’s Maritime Presence in the South China Sea: The Implementation of Japan’s Shifting Maritime and Naval Strategy in Responding China’s Assertiveness (2013-2018)
Maula, Yolla Destika
The changing security environment surrounding Japan has&#13;
brought Japan to become more enhance in shaping its security&#13;
direction. Following the newest revision of Japan‟s National&#13;
Security Strategy and National Defense Program Guidelines in&#13;
2013, Japan has brought a more proactive attitude towards its&#13;
strategy despite its military constraints; particularly on its&#13;
maritime presence, seeing the significance of securing maritime&#13;
stability as Japan is one of the largest archipelago nations. One of&#13;
Japan‘s priority is projected on the South China Sea dispute, one&#13;
of the most complex security issues in the Asia-Pacific region,&#13;
which grasped Japan‘s attention as its national interests lie within&#13;
the disputed waters. The shift in Japan‘s naval and maritime&#13;
strategy has resulted in a more intensified approach towards the&#13;
South China Sea; encouraged by China‘s assertive behavior, in&#13;
which perceived to be changing the status quo. Under the principle&#13;
of “Proactive Contribution to Peace” and the pursuance of “Open&#13;
and Stable Seas”, Japan strengthen its strategy through the&#13;
adoption of U.S.‘ “rebalance” strategy, the enhancement of defense&#13;
cooperation as well as capacity building of the regional countries,&#13;
the escalating dispatch of its naval power, which projected in joint&#13;
naval exercise and ship port visit to respond China‘s assertiveness&#13;
in the South China Sea.

<description>Projecting The People‟s Republic of China‟s Soft Power: China‟s Cultural Diplomacy Efforts through Confucius Institute towards Republic of South Africa (Case Study of Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University 2014-2016)
RIZKI, MUHAMMAD MAULANA
Culture is one of the important assets of a country, including for the People’s Republic of China&#13;
(PRC). The rise of the PRC after its economic reform in 1978 was seen as a threat by many&#13;
countries, especially for Western countries. The PRC is considered to have the potential to be&#13;
dominating power, especially in Asia, as well as in the international world. In promoting the&#13;
peaceful rise of PRC, as well as dismissing the existing perceptions, the PRC uses cultural&#13;
diplomacy which is a way for the PRC to promote its Soft Power through the establishment of&#13;
Confucius Institute in various countries as the dissemination of culture is a part of PRC’s foreign&#13;
policy, including in the Republic of South Africa, where Republic of South Africa itself had&#13;
established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the PRC. There are already five&#13;
Confucius institutes in Republic of South Africa, and one of them is at Stellenbosch University. In&#13;
this regard, the Confucius Institute serves as a way for the PRC to promote language and culture&#13;
for students in Republic of South Africa, fostering mutual understanding, and as a way for the&#13;
PRC to maintain the relations with Republic of South Africa. This research is using a qualitative&#13;
descriptive method, to provide analysis of the sources obtained, in the form of news articles,&#13;
books, and scientific journals. The existence of Confucius Institute in South Africa has showed&#13;
that PRC has conducted its cultural diplomacy effectively, not only South Africans understanding&#13;
about PRC, but also attract them to learn more about the country.

<description>INDONESIAN DIASPORA IN SOUTH KOREA AS THE AGENTS OF CULTURAL DIPLOMACY (2013 – 2018)
Rakhman, Ani Nurhani
In this modern era, the actor of diplomatic activities among states are not only high officials such as diplomats or ambassadors of each countries. Some changes happened in the term of transnationalism, hence, there are some changes also in the roles of the citizens, specifically those who conduct their activities and reside out of the country, although in fact they are not the formal ambassador of one country. Apparently, as the time goes by, the Korean wave phenomenon is currently spreading wider and wider, which shows that the utilization of cultural diplomacy as the soft power of South Korea, is a success. This is due to both formal and informal ambassadors of South Korea. Indonesia itself is one of the country that is gladly receiving the influence from the Korean culture. Talking about cultural diplomacy, Indonesia also using its culture as its soft power, however, the writer think that Indonesian culture as a tool for diplomacy is not yet used optimally compared to South Korea, there are still many rooms for improvement, especially in the diplomatic relations between the Republic of Indonesia and Republic of Korea which will be discussed in this thesis. The writer of this thesis will mainly focus on analyzing the roles of Indonesian diaspora which consists of Indonesian migrant workers, Indonesian students, and Indonesian marriage immigrants who are residing in South Korea as well as their efforts in supporting the government on Indonesian cultural diplomacy in South Korea from 2013 to 2018. In this thesis, the author used qualitative research method in order to answer the research question. Meanwhile the theories used in this thesis are people to people diplomacy, cultural diplomacy, as well as transnational activities. Through this research, the author conclude that the efforts of the Indonesian diaspora in South Korea has made the Indonesian culture known to the local citizens of South Korea. The activities of the diaspora have been a great complement to the government’s effort in Indonesian cultural diplomacy
