Firdaus, Mochamad Fadly
The rapid growth of co-living as a contemporary housing concept in urban areas
has created an urgent need for interior design strategies that can accommodate
the diverse lifestyles, activities, and backgrounds of its residents. This study

focuses on optimizing the design of shared spaces in community-based co-
living environments, with the primary objective of enhancing comfort, social

interaction, and spatial flexibility. The research adopts the Design-Based
Research (DBR) method, which integrates five stages: contextual problem
analysis, formulation of initial design solutions, implementation and
exploration through semi-structured interviews and participatory observation,
reflection and refinement of design iterations, and final evaluation based on
comfort, functionality, and social usability indicators. The findings reveal that
major design challenges include the absence of clear spatial zoning, limited

natural lighting, suboptimal ventilation, and the inflexible use of fixed, non-
modular furniture. These issues were addressed through the application of

ergonomic principles, the integration of balanced natural and artificial lighting
strategies, and the introduction of flexible, modular furniture to support
dynamic spatial arrangements. Furthermore, the adoption of the Japandi style—
combining minimalist Japanese aesthetics with the warmth and functionality of
Scandinavian design—proved effective in creating spaces that are visually
calming, practical, and conducive to both productivity and communal
interaction. In conclusion, this research demonstrates that DBR provides a
robust framework for generating contextual, adaptive, and applicable interior
design solutions for co-living environments. The proposed design not only
achieves aesthetic value but also strengthens the role of shared spaces as
collective hubs that promote community engagement, personal comfort, and
modern communal living.

Old buildings often have the potential to be repurposed, giving them new value without
the need for full demolition. This study aims to transform a former restaurant into a SPA
facility using an adaptive reuse approach, focusing on spatial efficiency, user comfort,
and preservation of local identity. The research applied a qualitative method, including
observation, documentation of existing conditions, user needs analysis, and interviews
with the client. The design concept chosen is Balinese Tropical Contemporary,
combining traditional Balinese values with modern aesthetics. The design process
involved space analysis, relationship matrix, bubble diagram, and block plan to ensure
functional and aesthetic flow. The result of this design is a clear vertical zoning: the first
floor for public areas (receptionist, waiting area, manicure/pedicure), the second floor for
treatment areas (sauna, soaking room, treatment room), and the third floor for private
areas (VIP room, laundry, staff facilities). The use of natural materials, soft lighting, and
Balinese decorative elements creates a warm and relaxing atmosphere that enhances the
overall SPA experience.

Ritonga, Fahrurrozi
This study explores the redesign of the President University Canteen by showcasing the rich local culture of Bekasi through the use of Tarawang batik motifs in the form of mural art. The aim of this effort is to create a unique visual identity and a more beautiful and comfortable atmosphere that reflects local wisdom. In addition, the redesign also emphasizes the use of ergonomic furniture that meets quality standards, thereby improving the comfort, safety, and efficiency of user activities. The approach applied in this study includes literature review, direct observation, user needs analysis, and the application of interior design concepts rooted in local culture and ergonomic principles. The results of the design show that the integration of Tarawang batik motifs in the murals not only adds aesthetic value but also serves as a means of cultural education for students and guests. In addition, the use of ergonomic furniture that meets good quality standards can create a healthy, functional cafeteria environment that supports social interaction. Thus, this design change is expected to be a solution in interior design that balances traditional values, modern functions, and user comfort. With a modern industrial concept, it brings a new look to the cafeteria with aesthetic values and uniqueness in every space and area.

This study aims to redesign the layout of the Bangka Belitung State Polytechnic of
Manufacturing (POLMANBABEL) library to improve user comfort and
productivity. The main issues raised are the limited library space of only 144 m2 out
of a total building area of 675 m2, and the suboptimal layout and interior design in
supporting learning and discussion activities. This study uses a qualitative method
with a field study approach and visual document analysis. The results of the analysis
show that the comfort of a space is greatly influenced by circulation, furniture
layout, and the visual identity of the space. Therefore, the redesign was carried out
using a Modern Coastal style approach that combines elements of the local culture
of Bangka Belitung and modern design principles. This design includes clear
zoning of the space, the use of ergonomic materials, and aesthetic elements that
support a conducive learning atmosphere. This research is expected to serve as a
reference in the development of library designs that are not only functional but also
represent local identity and enhance the user experience.
