dc.description.abstract Sometimes finding halal products is difficult, usually for those Muslims who live in non-Muslim majority places. To find halal products, they usually purchase products that are already halal certified or buy directly from Muslim vendors. In this thesis, a new mobile application to identify halal statuses of product’s ingredients is proposed, using computer vision technique namely Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The user only needs the ingredients text of product’s label image to use this application. The OCR is used to scan the ingredients text of product’s label image, then combined with Regular Expressions to format the text. To determine halal status, this application uses Levenshtein string-matching algorithm to match the ingredients with a halal status database. The whole product’s halal status is not identified by this application, only the ingredients. This application is designed to help Muslims who are unsure about the product’s ingredients they are going to consume. en_US
