Abstract:
The United Nations adopted a Technology Facilitation Mechanism that resulted in the inclusion of technologies in the Sustainable Development Goals targets and indicators. The Technology Facilitation Mechanism consists of 3 components, being UN Interagency Task Team, Science, Technology and Innovation Forum, and Online Platform. Having successfully achieved the UN Interagency Task Team and Science, Technology and Innovation Forum, the United Nations has not yet delivered Online Platform to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The objectives of the study were to analyse how an online technology platform could play roles in supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, discuss the cooperation between the United States and the United Kingdom in developing and enhancing their online national reporting platform, and discuss supporting pillars to make the online technology platform works. The study asks: How could an online technology platform as a catalyst play role in supporting the implementation of the SDGs? A qualitative method and semi-structured interview were used to answer the research question. The study found that an online technology platform has a role as a catalyst that delivers knowledge sharing, knowledge base, and best practice. The study also found that an online technology platform has roles in delivering collaboration, universal standard and Key Performance Indicator. The study limits its discussion on the technologies transition from the Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals and justification for the inclusion of technologies in SDGs targets and indicators.
