dc.description.abstract The end of Cold War has changed the condition in international system. Emergence of developing countries created new dynamic in international relations. One of the most significant emerging powers is China. After Open Door Policy in 1979, China has been developed to be an economic major power. Replacing Japan as the 2nd biggest economy in the world, China economic growth is followed by increasing military capability. Modernization in economic and military has expanded China's influence. With strengthening its position in international stage, China is indeed becoming major power in East Asian region. However, China has to deal territorial disputes with neighboring countries both in land and sea. One of the most well-known is China-Japan dispute over Diaoyu Islands. China's interest on Diaoyu Islands is relevant with its national security policy. Most importantly, it is concerning Beijing's sovereignty over the islands. In addition strategic advantage such as energy resources, increases its desire to claim the islands. In defending its interests in Diaoyu, China has been implementing smart power combining military and non-military capability. They are implemented in order to show China's strong stance over the islands, maintain its presence in the territory, and gain both domestic and international support. United States' presence as Japan security alliance also gives more challenges for China in asserting its claim. en_US
