Stress at work is an issue that may arise in all companies. Stress cannot be ignored as an unimportant issue because through high level of stress can affect the company performance. Especially for the hospitality industry, when the employee has high level of stress, it will be affecting the service quality of the employee. Employees in a hospitality industry are different from the employee in the business industry because the nature of working in hospitality industry is about the service selling. Moreover in food and beverage department which is must compete against the clock to satisfy the guests.
Job stress is not only very common but can greatly affect performance. The increase in absenteeism, increased turnover, depression, and illness is staggering, leading to loss productivity. This study will examine the correlation between job stress using three sources of job stress (long working hour, excessive workload and low pay) that is related with food and beverage department and turnover intention.
A survey of 112 respondents was conducted in three hotels: Aston Bogor, GH. Universal Hotel Bandung and Grand Cempaka Hotel Jakarta. The data will be analyzed by using descriptive statistic to determine the sources of job stress in food and beverage department and Spearman Rank correlation to show the correlation between job stress and turnover intention.
Results generally indicated that job stress and turnover intention have significant correlation. Specifically the correlations were in three areas of a) long working hours as the highest correlation, b) excessive workload as the moderate correlation and c) low pay as the lowest correlation. Having these findings, the human resource department personnel should concern about job stress issues in order to create more effective human resource practices within hotel industry. |
