THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GARUDA BHAYANGKARA TASK FORCE IN CONDUCTING PEACEKEEPING MISSION IN DARFUR, SUDAN (2013-2018)

Abstract

The conflict in Darfur is recognized as one of the worst conflicts in the world between African tribes which are described as two armed rebel groups namely the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) with Arab tribes described as armed groups supported by the Sudanese government namely Janjaweed. Conflicts between armed rebel groups and Janjaweed have an impact on civilians, the security situation in Darfur is uncertain with various types of security disturbances that have caused deaths and displacement. Therefore, the United Nations and the African Union took action by forming a hybrid operation called the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). Many participating countries joining this mission included Indonesia which participated by sending special forces called the Garuda Bhayangkara Task Force. This research was conducted to analyze the Garuda Bhayangkara Task Force in carrying out its mission as a peacekeeper in Darfur. The research was conducted by observing the increasing conflict in 2013 which was marked by the emergence of Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This research was conducted with qualitative methods and analyzed descriptively using official documents in the form of books and tested with the theory of peacekeeping operation. The final results of the study indicate that the Garuda Bhayangkara Task Force carried out mission tasks smoothly in accordance with the mandate given by the United Nations.
