PER MARE, PER TERRAM (BY SEA, BY LAND): THE IMPLEMENTATION OF UNITED KINGDOM MARITIME SECURITY GOVERNANCE IN THE REALMS OF NATIONAL POWER 2014-2017

Abstract

To date, sea is not only being a place for transport goods and services but it evolves as the centre of global geopolitics and power domination. As an island nation, maritime sector has contributed to United Kingdom defence, trade and economic for centuries. The long standing dependency of the sea and the growing complexity in the maritime domain demand UK government to be more aware on the possibilities the sea serves as well as the risks and threats that come along that require substantial strategy on maritime security. With the presence of capable military especially naval services, international allies and partners, United Kingdom further strengthen its position as one of the global actor to deter risks and threats in the strategic maritime domain. This thesis is scrutinizing how United Kingdom implements its National Strategy on Maritime Security amidst the growing challenges in global maritime domain and how the emergence of UK Maritime Forces to support the government to realize and secure its national interest beyond border. With an outward looking strategy that aims to have influence and further project the power globally in the maritime domain, United Kingdom emphasizes on developing economic and diplomatic influence through Maritime Governance Capacity Building Programme and security and defence through active involvement of UK Maritime Forces in global Maritime Security Operations and Defence Engagement.
