THE WOOD MARKET IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (E.U): A STUDY ON INDONESIA FOREST LAW ENFORCEMENT AND GOVERNANCE TRADE - VOLUNTARY PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT (2007 - 2013)

Abstract

The widespread practice of illegal logging and illegal timber exports from Indonesia to the European Union has become an important issue for both parties. Because of this problem, the European Union only allows legal timber which can be exported by Indonesia to Europe. Indonesia is very serious about this problem in order to export timber to Europe. This study discusses what efforts Indonesia has taken to tackle illegal logging and what actions Indonesia has taken to repeat illegal logging. The period of time taken for this thesis research is from 2007 to 2013, more precisely the FLEGT-VPA negotiation period. Thus, this study is an analytical and descriptive study using qualitative research methods through bilateral relations between European Union and Indonesia. The results of this study concluded that European market made VLEGT-VPA to know only legal timber which is exported by Indonesia to Europe. This is an urgency for Indonesian to immediately reduce illegal logging and the sale of illegal timber. Indonesia made a policy of timber legality verification system (SVLK) in order to be able to market European Union markets.
