THE ROLE OF CHEVRON GEOTHERMAL SALAK, LTD. IN MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS THROUGH CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAMS AT REGIONAL LEVEL (A CASE OF STUDY OF CSR PROGRAMS IN BOGOR AND SUKABUMI)

Abstract

Through international consensus, United Nations (UN) and its member countries in year 2000 at the Millennium Summit created a way to end poverty and set a time bound until 2015-the time where there are no more words of "extreme poverty" existed. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is the agreed consensus by 189 member countries which the main goal is to end poverty by 2015. The main idea was resulted into 8 goals that hopefully will be achieved at the agreed deadline. In order to reach the target, state and non-state actors are involved. One of non-state actor which is entangled is Multinational Companies (MNCs). The roles that multinational companies can be played to help the government achieving the target are through its business core and its philanthropy activity or social investment, which called Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Therefore, this research will observe the role of Chevron Geothermal Salak, Ltd as an MNC in helping government of Indonesia to reach MDGs through its Corporate Social Responsibility program. Thus, this research applies qualitative analysis through interview and received primary data right from the company as well as secondary data collection from the internet. In this research, Chevron Geothermal Salak, Ltd. is used as company sample whereas its CSR programs managed to help the government of Indonesia achieving MDGs target by 2015. The contribution itself is manifested in supporting the local community development in Bogor and Sukabumi regencies. The result of this research indicates that although Corporate Responsibility (CR) program conducted by the Chevron Geothermal Salak, Ltd. is not directly intended for MDGs, the programs could be categorized as a systematic effort to help the government of Indonesia reaching MDGs target at the regional level.
