According to Walter Murch’s book, In The Blink of An Eye, film
editing prioritizes emotion over its continuity. In thriller film, editing
technique that mostly applied to make the emotion or feeling
uncomfortable is by using long take. There is a study where the
editor removes the pre-cut motion and changes the original audio,
but the results show how the viewers pay less attention to the new
clip, with no pre-cut, meanwhile the audio shows the big role for
the film. In this case, continuity acts important to attract the
attention of the audience. According to Bowen and Thompson,
Action Edit is used to combine two shots with the same subject in
different frames, paying attention to 6 elements: information,
motivation, composition, camera angle, sound and most
importantly continuity. Referring to Gianetti, using a close up shot
in the middle of a medium shot can dramatize a story. In this
context, Action Edit, using the straight cut, applied between
different shots showing continuous action of subjects smoothly.
The writer applies the theory about Action Edit in the film titled
“Stupor” and analyse it. There are different effects between using
long take and Action Edit to create suspense. The results reflected
the effectiveness of using Action Edit by paying attention to the six
elements in it to create suspense in "Stupor" film. |
