dc.description.abstract The sound element has an important role and cannot be separated from the process of creating film works. One of the functions of the sound element is as a signal that indicates how emotionally it should respond to the actions or events given, namely through music, sound effects and also dialogue. These three elements are one of the important elements in building the mood to tension in every scene in the film. Louis Gianetti made a statement in a book Understanding Movies, that the pitch, volume, and tempo are often used in a series of tensions (suspense), especially before and during the climax. Diegetic offscreen creates the illusion of wider space but limits the audience's expectations of the story in the film. To create the illusion of maximum space, it takes a dimension of sound that can be created with sound effect techniques. This research applies the sound effect technique in the diegetic offscreen element to build suspense in the film. Based on the results of the analysis of the results obtained, it can be concluded that the sound element observed through the sound element in the film "Blank Canvas" increases as it approaches suspense points until during the climax. The sound element is able to build the atmosphere (mood) to seem more real. en_US
