In 2000, the United Nations have brought together nations to sign the
Millennium Declaration, where all signed nations must commit to the Millennium
Development Goals. The Millennium Development Goals consists of eight goals
which focus on the welfare of the citizen, eradicating poverty included. Based on
the reports made by the United Nations Development Programme, China is
chosen as one of the countries with the largest contribution to the decrease in
number of extreme poverty. This research focuses on analyzing and describing the
successful strategy of China in alleviating the number of people living under the
poverty line from the year 2010 until 2015 through the use of qualitative and
descriptive method. The writer uses sources such as books, journals, news sources
and electronic resources as a reference to write this thesis. From the collected data
such as China’s Five-Year Plan program, it was shown that China has put their
focus on using fiscal, industry, social and credit funding to improve its soft
infrastructure and hard infrastructure through their national and international
projects to achieve the set goal from the Millennium Development Goals. The
projects include the Belt and Road Initiative. Through this strategy, China was
able to lift more than half of its population living in impoverished condition above
the poverty line. |
