THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INDIA’S MARITIME STRATEGY TOWARDS SOMALI PIRACY IN INDIAN OCEAN REGION (2006 - 2011)

Abstract

Indian Ocean Region is famously known for its maritime trade, cultural and business exchange for a very long time, which indirectly play significant role in economic development. With potentials that IOR provided, it would attract the interest of either state or non-state actors. India, any other states, and international firms has been using the maritime route that has been provided by the IOR to help their economic and business grow. But then, those facts lure non-state actor such Somali pirates to preying on the shipping vessels to fulfill their need. As the Somali piracy grew in IOR, India has started to look up on their existence and start to implement its maritime strategy to counter them to secure their maritime trade. This thesis is aimed to give a better understanding on the Somali Piracy in IOR along with how India implement its maritime strategy in combating Somali Piracy to secure the process of India’s maritime trade. India implements its maritime strategy by strengthening its presence in Indian Ocean. The way India implement its maritime strategy in combating Somali Piracy is not only strengthening their navy but also preventing the development of Somali piracy by giving Somali people another option other than being a pirate such as giving them a better education and job opportunity.
