THE ROLE OF WORLD WIDE FUND NATURE CONSERVATION IN INDONESIA THROUGH THE HEART OF BORNEO PROJECT (2009-2013)

Abstract

The problem of environmental destruction in Borneo receives the global attention. The World Wide Fund for Nature as the non-governmental organization which focuses on environmental issues initiated the formation of the Heart of Borneo initiative which was declared in 2007. The Heart of Borneo initiative is the only cross-border conservation cooperation between Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia to manage trans-boundary areas, manage protected areas, manage and conserve natural resources and engaged with local communities to develop the capacity of local communities. Thus, this thesis aims to analyze the role of WWF conservation in Indonesia through the Heart of Borneo Project. By using the ecocentrism lens, this thesis uses Lewis and Kanji Non-Governmental Organization Theory to understand the role of WWF in implementing the program through the collaboration with the Government of Indonesia and other institutions. By using qualitative method to analyze the data and gather resources from official websites, WWF documents and reports and the Government Indonesia. This thesis found that the role of WWF has given significant improvement in an effort to protect Borneo diversity.
