THE REPRESENTATION OF FEMALE SUPERHERO CHARACTER IN ‘WONDER WOMAN (2017)’ FILM

Abstract

Women have more decision-making power and influence now. Feminism described that the situation of women explained as to change oppressive structures in which depicted women who are under men as objects. That problem could be seen in the “Wonder Woman (2017)” film as its example. Because of the depiction of women is lack of power and authority, the research question appeared at this research is how does the film represent Wonder Woman character as a female superhero and constructed the meaning to the audiences. This research is interesting to be discussed because there is still lack of research through film media that proves women are treated unfairly by the society. This research aimed to find out about how Wonder Woman represents herself as a female superhero and what message could be delivered from the film. To answer the research question, the researcher used 3 metafunctions method from social semiotic by Kress and Van Leeuwen. This research found that women who represent by Wonder Woman character still had the social injustice issue almost in every aspect. This research is expected to Public Relations where social semiotics theory used in this film research as a method in order to explore the meaning of representation and PR strategy to deliver the messages of representation of a female superhero in a unique way, which is through a film.
