Abstract:
The Bharata Wayang Orang Theatre is one of the few traditional performing arts centers that still
survives amid the tide of modernization in Jakarta. However, the existence of wayang orang faces
various challenges, such as the regeneration of performers, declining audience interest, and limited
government support. This documentary aims to uncover the historical traces and struggles of
traditional artists in preserving this art form. This research employs qualitative methods, utilizing
data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews, direct observation, and audio visual
documentation. As a researcher and cameraman, I am responsible for gathering data on the lives
and struggles of the artists, and translating this reality into visual language through
cinematographic techniques that support the documentary narrative. This documentary film adopts
an expository style, featuring direct interviews with the artists and visual depictions that reinforce
their message of struggle. The results of this research are expected to raise public and government
awareness of the importance of preserving wayang orang art and to give greater appreciation to the
artists who are struggling to preserve traditional culture in the midst of changing times.
