AN ANALYSIS OF POPULATION CONTROL OPERATIONS AS COUNTERINSURGENCY STRATEGY IN THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY AND THE VIETNAM WAR

Abstract

The Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War both took place in the Cold War Era. Due to the success of the Malayan Emergency, the United States wanted to emulate the population control operations that were conducted in the Malayan Emergency, in the Vietnam War. However, the population control operations that were used in the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War had different results. Contrary to the success of the Malayan Emergency, the population control operations in the Vietnam War failed to achieve its objectives. This study aims to find the key differences between the population control operations used in the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War. This research uses a qualitative method of comparative case study analysis, by comparing the population control operations using a rubric of assessment. The result of this research, the writer concludes that there are two key differences between the control operations in the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War.
