Abstract:
This study discuss the comparison between regional multilateral and mini-lateral initiatives in tackling the issue of piracy and armed robbery in Southeast Asia. The uncertainty of the international environment can also cause transnational crimes to continue to develop, including the piracies and armed robberies. The long history of piracy and the geopolitical importance of Southeast Asia has led on the establishment of several regional initiatives. This study uses the qualitative methodology, within the time frame from 2010 to 2020. There are several major finding of this study. First, the strength and weakness of each frameworks related their cooperation mechanism. Second, the emergence of mini-lateral initiatives in the region that indicate as a trend towards more practical cooperation. Lastly, despite of the disadvantages, the practical, flexibility, and narrowed concept of mini-lateralism, these mini-lateral initiatives represented more effective and efficient in tackling the maritime security issues, especially the issue of regional piracy and armed robbery.
