Abstract:
From this thesis, the author generally discussed that “Belt Road Initiative” (BRI)
is a cross-continental multilateral collaboration presented by the Chinese
government that encompasses East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia, Africa as well as Eastern Europe. In terms of the geography that BRI has ever begun, it is the most massive multilateral cooperation. It is considerably larger than the EU and the United Nations alone. Due to its factual relevance, BRI required a theoretically informed comprehension. However, the majority of BRI studies place greater emphasis on practical concerns by taking into account the viewpoints of political-economic, Chinese internal interests and regional studies. Only a few scholars tried to investigate the conceptual framework of BRI to evaluate the Chinese Government's purpose of trying to pursue this initiative. By reviewing related literature of realism approach and smart power theory on defense, this thesis therefore defines BRI as one of the objectives of the Chinese government to preserve and enhance cross-continental stability in achieving its military interest. This thesis contended that the Chinese political security stability in the middle of its growing strength and worldwide involvement is one of China' s essential interests. Thus, through the BRI process, China is seeking to achieve its military interest by engaging all the instruments in strengthening its political existence and power.
