Abstract:
The United State use development diplomacy to promote democracy in Africa especially in South Sudan. For more than 25 years, The United States has become the largest humanitarian aid donor to South Sudan through USAID. USAID began to increase his role when Obama's era, this is appropriate because Obama's strategy is to focus on democracy and diplomacy in the world. The promoting aid of US democracy values is as a form of interest from Obama. Having said that, this thesis aims to analyze the role of USAID in contributing to the promotion of democracy in South Sudan under Obama administration. This analysis will be connected with the framework of the Development Diplomacy theory which is to understand the implementation of development diplomacy in South Sudan and the role of USAID in order to promote the democracy through transition strategy in South Sudan.
This research found that there are several main findings. First, the foreign policy of the US under Barrack Obama’s administration has achieved several major contributions to the US national interest such as security and prosperity. Second, USAID plays the biggest role in the success of foreign policy made by Obama to promote democracy by using larger development as a policy. Third, the mission of USAID is to promote democracy in South Sudan and the results of its mission through a transition strategy that focuses on development in South Sudan with aid programs for building the capacity of GOSS.
